Davy Van De Vusse - Software Engineer

Davy Van De Vusse

Davy is a perfectionist who is great with people and a committed optimist. Auckland born and bred, Davy joined the Endev team from the University of Auckland, where he was awarded a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems with First Class Honours and also employed to design a web-based online assessment tool, Oasis, using Python.

One of Davy's final year study programmes focussed on sustainability engineering, an important emerging field, and his final year research work was a software project to compress and encode Navman NZ map data. This successfully reduced the overall road map data size used in Navman GPS units by using better road representation and encoding techniques. In his first year Davy also worked as an Engineering Assistant at Buckley Systems where he helped assemble magnets for a circular nuclear particle accelerator for the Australian Synchrotron project.

Davy won the Mervin Walter Stoddart Scholarship in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2004 and was ranked in the top 5% of engineering students in 2003.

When away from the computer, Davy teaches Martial Arts at the Kohimarama club of Hsou Jing Do. He has been instructing since 1996 and holds is a Hsou Jing Do Black Belt. He's also a musician and dancer, playing the keyboard, guitar and didgeridoo and earning medals in Latin American, Ballroom, and New Vogue dance exams.

Shane S. Anderson

Shane has been programming since he taught himself Pascal aged 9 and is working part time with Endev while he completes his studies. Having designed numerous, complex web applications, including membership systems and content management systems, and being a naturally gifted mathematician, Shane is adept at problem solving and software design. Shane has already been self-employed for three years and has an impressive track record in group development and making users happy. He developed the popular task-switcher programme, Reflex Vision (formerly Entbloess) which attracted 40,000 downloads and also Slate Labyrinth which scored 5 out of 5 at TabletPCBuzz.com

Shane is skilled in SQL server, Pascal, C++, C# Microsoft Visual Studio. He received a Top Coder award on RentACoder.com, placing him in the top 2% of developers offering their services through the service after just six projects and has an unbroken 10 out of 10 feedback record on the site.

Mike Mao - Software Engineer

Mike Mao

Mike is an ambitious and dedicated developer who joined the Endev team in July 2008. While completing his University of Auckland studies, as a software engineer, Mike worked for several local retail businesses, such as Magness Benrow, establishing business-to-consumer online applications, before joining a small software company on Auckland’s North Shore. From there, Mike came to Endev keen to further advance his technical skills in a demanding and supportive work environment. While he enjoyed the opportunities for wide, conceptual thinking during his degree, Mike is now finding the specification and documentation disciplines he learned invaluable to his work.

Mike immigrated to New Zealand on his own, aged 18, to continue his education, and attended the International School, polishing his excellent English, before enrolling at University. He grew up with his parents in Shanghai and, from the age of 12, regularly dismantled his first computer, when it overheated, because of the lack of air conditioning at home.

Mike is a current affairs buff and keenly follows New Zealand and international news. In his own time he likes to build technical gadgets and found his way to the Endev offices the first time using a GPS system he designed and built himself.

Phil Howie - Software Engineer

Phil Howie

Phil brings Endev a rich understanding and extensive experience in web design and development. He is dedicated to crafting quality online experiences which users find easy because they are intuitive. Prior to joining Endev, Phil was part of the team at Shift, contributing to leading websites such as newzealand.com, the country’s online tourism gateway. The site needed to cater for a wide range of users and perform robustly, an ideal platform for Phil to showcase his focus on quality online experiences.

Having first collaborated with the Endev team in his earlier position at Terabyte, Phil joined the team in 2008, keen to be part of the focussed, boutique approach. At Terabyte Phil had managed the production and front end coding and construction for substantial sites such as parliament.govt.nz, which set the benchmark for best-practice when it was developed in 2005. Having trained in Multimedia and web design at Natcoll, Phil’s first web role in the industry was an award winning design and rebuild for renault.co.nz.

When not at his keyboard, Phil likes to escape the urban environment altogether, hiking in the Waitakere Ranges, hitting the beach and playing the odd round of golf. He also has a fascination with the craft of cooking and matching wines to the dishes he creates. But it was his youthful passion for computer gaming, which stimulated Phil’s passion for web usability and design craft, teaching him that quality code and user-interfaces are essential to the success of the software and the enjoyment of the user.

Phil lives with his wife on the Te Atatu Peninsula and the couple are expecting their first child in June 2009.

Sean Jackson - Software Engineer

Sean Jackson

Sean is working part-time at Endev while he finishes his Degree in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Auckland. He’s enjoying the friendly environment at Endev, finding the more experienced team members happy to help even when he asks ‘silly questions’. Sean is also delighted to be using his technical skills to make a living – especially after four years working as a checkout assistant and supervisor at Woolworths’ supermarket.

Sean attended Rosehill College in Papakura, taking physics, chemistry and engineering and did his first programming on a calculator. His software skills have grown massively during his studies and his passion for maths and computing have inspired him to undertake two substantial collaborations in his spare time. Putting his aptitude for pure maths in particular to good use, Sean is providing the mathematics component for an Artificial Intelligence project with a colleague. He is also part of a team of students taking part in the Microsoft Imagine Cup, whereby groups compete to develop software that helps meet one of the United Nation’s eight Millenium goals. Sean’s team are developing a simulator to enable the World Health Organisation to map the outbreak of diseases.

Sean’s work and studies don’t leave much time for sport but he played rugby, as a hooker, flanker and on the wing, until his teammates outgrew him. Sean lives in Manurewa and is learning to drive over the summer. He hopes to join the Endev team full time once he completes his Degree.

Tony Lin - Software Tester

Tony Lin

Tony is passionate about the value of good communication in developing great software. He joined the Endev team in July 2009 as a software tester, to help ensure every aspect of every application works first time.

Tony’s love for technology began when he got his first computer, aged 12. He completed a Diploma in computing and worked as a tester and then a game designer, developing scenarios and rules for games. In 2002, Tony left his sub-tropical island home in the South-China city of Amoy to move to New Zealand to study. He completed a conjoint degree at Massey, in e-commerce and information systems, and settled in Auckland

After graduation, Tony worked as a data-analyst for TelstraClear, and was part of the massive project to migrate the customer database to a new system. Following this, Tony spent two years at EDS providing IT support to clients like Fonterra and Telecom.

Ambitious to become a business analyst in the future, Tony moved to Endev because he wanted to be part of a smaller team with better communication and more personal connection between team members. He enjoys pushing the limits of the software the developers build to ensure it’s ready for users.

Outside work, Tony is a keen sportsman playing in a basketball league and soccer team as well as swimming and going to the gym. He belongs to his local Toastmasters in Birkenhead where he is growing his confidence and perfecting his speech-making skills through fortnightly meetings.
